If you want to know the secrets and incredible local history of Wandsworth then Geoff Simmons is your man.

We caught up with Geoff to discuss his walking tours, his favourite fact about SW18, and the secrets hiding in plain sight.

Hi Geoff, tell us who you are and what you do.

I’m Geoff Simmons. I work as a graphic designer, but in my spare time I like to get out on the streets, engage with people and tell stories in the Wandsworth/Tooting area.

I want to expand knowledge about our wonderful borough, not just the old stuff but telling people about the good things happening right now.

For ten years I’ve been doing guided walks, talks, tours and putting my plaques. I also work with many local schools.

What inspired you to start running tours in Wandsworth?

I’m constantly amazed that people don’t know what’s under their noses. I discovered that the more I knew about where I lived, the more I came to love it, and that’s better for everyone. I just want to share that feeling.

When is your next event?

There’s pretty much a non-stop flow of great happenings. The next biggie is my Magical Musical History Talk at All Saints Church, Tooting, on 7 March, followed by the very popular Walkin’ in a Wandsworth Wonderland tour on 25 May as part of Wandsworth Heritage Festival. These events are free.

How can we keep up to date with your events?

You can follow me on Twitter or Instagram, or take a look at my selection of walks on Eventbrite.

I’ve also got a blog which is worth having a look at.

Tell us your favourite local fact.

My favourite band, The Sex Pistols, set sail from the Rose and Crown pub in August 1975. Wouldn’t it be great to see a plaque?

What can we do to preserve and celebrate our local history?

Having someone like me doing tours on a regular basis, celebrating places like Wandsworth Town, is such an asset. A big crowd of people on a tour creates a real buzz, and people see it and think ‘Hey, what’s going on? I must live somewhere special!’ It inspires them to find out more and get involved in their community.

What’s your favourite thing about Wandsworth Town?

Its unpredictability; it never stands still. I’ve seen some changes in the last 30 years, it’s a unique mix of old and new and constantly evolving to meet the needs of its people.
