Southside Shopping Centre will be celebrating Black History Month this October with a vibrant line-up of events showcasing the creativity, culture and heritage within our community.
Pointe Black, a non-profit community ballet company, will be performing on Saturday 11 October, from 1pm and 4pm. Blending classical ballet with African and Caribbean influences, Pointe Black is a global movement with outreach projects spanning from South London to Guatemala. The performance will feature excerpts from their fifth theatre production Overcome, and will celebrate highlights from previous storylines.
London-based DJ double act Ms Truths & Vibesquad Lee will be performing live on Saturday 18 October from 12pm to 6pm. The dynamic duo will deliver a specially curated set featuring steel pan rhythms and powerful vocals, inspired by the theme of standing firm in power and pride – a celebration of identity, strength, and community.
Wakuda will bring their popular marketplace to Southside from 20 to 25 October, from 11am to 5pm. Famed for championing African and Caribbean brands, Wakuda is both an online and offline destination for discovering unique gifts and lifestyle products. Guests will be able to explore products from handcrafted jewellery, natural skincare and haircare, greeting cards, home décor, and more, with all items created by talented black-owned businesses.
Shannon Reed, Centre Director at Southside Shopping Centre, said: “This Black History Month, we’re proud to be hosting a programme of events that celebrates the richness and vibrancy of Black culture within our community.
“From the uplifting rhythms of a live steel pan band to a diverse market showcasing Black-owned businesses and local makers, our aim is to create meaningful, joyful experiences that honour the heritage and creativity at the heart of Black History Month.
“We encourage the local community to come down, get involved, and be part of this important celebration.”
