Ever pondered the significance of the River Wandle or wanted to know more about Wandsworth’s origins?
You are invited to the Wandsworth Heritage Talk on Tuesday 2 December at 11am, with Mick Taylor, award-winning contributor at the Wandle Industrial Museum.
Mick will uncover the story of the River Wandle – from the origins of Wandsworth’s name, to its remarkable industrial heritage. He will explore the river’s role in powering mills and factories, including its connection to the pioneering Surrey Iron Railway, and trace the area’s transformation from a thriving industrial hub to the vibrant residential neighbourhood we know today.
In the second part of the session, Mick will focus on the people who shaped and interpreted this landscape. He will highlight the artists, writers, and creative figures who have lived in Wandsworth or captured its character in their work, revealing how the borough’s unique blend of nature, industry, and community has long inspired cultural expression.
Hosted at the iconic Wandsworth Mills, the development provides the ideal backdrop to this historical journey. As a contemporary regeneration project that seamlessly weaves heritage into modern design, it’s architecture draws inspiration from the area’s rich industrial past; while beautifully landscaped public spaces will reconnect residents and visitors with the River Wandle. Together, the talk and the development illustrate how Wandsworth continues to evolve while honouring the stories and craftsmanship that shaped it.
