Wandsworth Council is inviting you to shine a light on our vibrant African Caribbean community through the power of food.
Food connects cultures across generations and communities, carrying stories of migration, resilience, passion, identity and pride.
October will feature a month-long series of community events aimed at celebrating African Caribbean food in Wandsworth, from cooking workshops, school activities, storytelling, panel discussions, and much more.
The event will be launched by Wandsworth local and celebrated TV chef Ainsley Harriott.
Local businesses, community groups, and schools are encouraged to get on board and host a food-themed event for October. You have until 5pm on Monday 8 September 2025 to register your event.
Local food venues could host African Caribbean supper clubs, cooking workshops, or even themed menus and signature dishes.
Schools could include African Caribbean foodstuffs to their harvest festival table. They could host themed show and tell events with local African Caribbean business owners or influential people. You could even add special dishes to your school lunch menu.
The wider community may be inspired to host themed quiz nights, potluck dinners and baking competitions, slam poetry or spoken word events, or wherever your creativity takes you.
The council would also love to collate your authentic African or Caribbean recipes, those flavours that bring back memories. The recipes will be turned into a community recipe book. Submit yours at [email protected], or drop them off at your local library. You can even submit a photo of your family or the person who passed down the recipe, along with your family history.
More information on local events and activities for African Caribbean Food Month will be made available next month.
